Staying In Touch
Keeping up friendships is hard work. Most jobs offer a benefit that goes unnoticed. During the pandemic most of the world became a closed environment. Working from home became the norm and all those jobs that required human interaction became siloed or solitary. When things began opening client service was the first to bring people together to work --- restaurants allowed people to work together. Construction allowed workers to work together. The value – human personal interaction. The debate continues around the value of “in office” versus “at home”. I will let others value the efficiency or economics of this debate. The real value for working together is exactly that, working together. During those hours the important human parts of your life are shared with others and that friendship is the real value.
I am looking forward to reconnecting with colleagues that I have not seen in a while. Separation whether because of work environment, changing jobs, or life circumstance is the real culprit of feeling separated from people and thus friends. The friendship pool becomes very small indeed if one is no longer working amongst other people. Suddenly those lifelong friends have disappeared and the months and years go by when you finally make the phone call to say hello and realize that it has been two years.
The value of “in office” work is not the work, it is the value derived from working with others.
Humans need their humanity.
