Meet Fred
Human connection has defined every chapter of my forty year career, from my beginnings at Goldman Sachs to becoming a pre-IPO partner at the firm.
However, my story really started on the beaches of Santa Monica where I worked as a lifeguard. It was a profession I adored—the sun, the beach, the engagement with people from all walks of life. But my father felt a more “adult” career was required and suggested I go into sales.
My dad intuited that my emotional intelligence is my gift: empathy, a willingness to listen, a passion for life and learning about others, an ability to translate another’s wants and needs into action. It was these skills that led to the most significant transaction of my career with the Bishop Estate, which led to a $500 million investment in the firm.
These skills enabled me to advise and serve on the boards of the UCSB Foundation, the Buck Institute, Aravo Solutions, and Thorne/DNP. It is these skills that I teach when giving talks and lectures at institutions, such as Share Our Strength, Denver University, University of California at Santa Barbara, Washington State University, Cal Poly State University, and the Commonwealth Club.
And it was these skills that empowered me to go outside of my comfort zone and embark on the adventure of owning and operating a 5,000-acre cutting horse ranch in Santa Barbara County, where I worked tirelessly to create a sustainable carbon-absorbing grassland property, meeting the highest environmental standards.
Today, as an author, speaker, and consultant, I help salespeople and development officers connect to clients with authenticity and humanity in a digital world.
There is no better indication of my abilities than the success I have had in raising my five children. All have completed advanced degrees at major universities and are now working to raise their own families and develop successful careers in the arts, business, psychology, and law. It is this humanity—this life well lived and well learned—that forms the basis of my work now. I am living the most passionate chapter of my life and look forward to sharing it with you and your organization.
